Spickzettel is an overlay app for quickly taking screenshots and making annotations anywhere, anytime. I originally conveived it as a little helper for playing puzzle games while streaming, but it has uses beyond that.

Be aware that this app is in an early stage and there are various features yet to be implemented and refined. I suggest to make regular backups of your config an library (located in roaming and local AppData, respectively), especially before trying a new version.

The source code is available at https://github.com/ochimedia/spickzettel and it is licensed under GPL-3.0. The binary provided here is the same that is available on the GitHub releases page which is automatically built from the source code.

Note that in its current state the binary is not signed and may cause SmartScreen warnings. I'm looking into ways to have it signed properly at a later time. Also, heuristics-based virus scanners may object since the app performs actions like reading raw input from the mouse and keyboard due to the nature of the app. It works completely locally and does not perform network calls. Feel free to take a look at the source code yourself.

Was the app developed with the help of AI?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: I'm a developer who spends most of my day programming and consulting for a living. I'm also a gamer and streamer, and the idea for this app came from that hobby. AI models have reached a point where they can realize ideas you would otherwise never find the time for. Most of the code in this app was written by an AI model, and changes were directed and reviewed by me. I deliberately chose a programming language and libraries I know well, so I can understand and judge what the machine writes. I've invested a lot of time and thought (and also quite some money) in iterating on and refining the ideas behind it, as well as testing it extensively by hand in addition to an automated test suite. I hope that shows, and that you find it useful.

Find more information in the ABOUT file on GitHub; its contents are also directly available in the app itself: https://github.com/ochimedia/spickzettel/blob/main/ABOUT.md
